“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
(Romans 8:31, NLT)
Let’s talk about faith!
What kind of soldier would you be if you didn’t have a shield to protect you? What kind of disciple of Christ would you be if God hadn’t equipped you with faith?
Faith is to God what fear is to the devil.
“And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him (Hebrews 11:6, NLT).”
That’s why God wants His soldiers—His disciples—to carry shields of faith.
Faith pleases God. It’s not just about holding the shield of faith; it’s about reducing unbelief so that your faith can grow stronger.
“For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith (1 John 5:4, NLT).”
Some believers may appear to have more faith than others, but faith itself is a gift from God. Every born-again believer has access to the same quality of faith that Jesus had—it’s God’s faith at work in you.
Faith isn’t about trusting in your strength—it’s trusting in God’s faithfulness.
“That is why the Scriptures say, “I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing (Romans 4:17, NLT).”
Faith is supernatural—it goes beyond what you can see. That’s why God gave us the Shield of Faith.
“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12, NLT).”
“In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil (Ephesians 6:16, NLT).”
History of the Shield of Faith
Roman shields were impressive—about four feet long and three feet wide, often made from calfskin or goatskin stretched over wood. Iron rims reinforced the edges, and the center held a metal boss to deflect attacks. The shield curved inward to hug the soldier’s body, protecting nearly every vital organ.
Before battle, soldiers soaked their shields in water. This made them heavy but fireproof. When the enemy’s fiery arrows hit, the water-soaked leather would extinguish them on contact.
Even more powerful—soldiers often locked their shields together, forming a wall of defense.
That’s exactly what God calls the Body of Christ to do: stand together in unity.
Jesus said, “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you (Matthew 18:19, NLT).”
There’s strength in unity. When believers link shields—standing in agreement, prayer, and faith—the enemy cannot break through.
Application: How to Use the Shield of Faith
Before we talk about application, let’s look at the root meaning of faith.
The Latin word fides means “trust, confidence, or belief.” To have faith means to place your complete trust and loyalty in God’s character, not your circumstances.
Faith protects your mind and heart from the fiery arrows of the enemy—doubt, fear, temptation, anxiety, and lies.
When you bring God into your battles, you begin to see that people aren’t your enemies—spiritual forces are. The person criticizing you or rejecting you isn’t the real attacker. The spirit of fear, bitterness, or rejection behind them is.
Fear, doubt, and unforgiveness are fiery arrows—but faith extinguishes them.
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19, NLT).
Faith reminds you that you’re not fighting alone. It keeps you grounded in God’s promises and aware that the ultimate victory is already yours.
As for God, his way is perfect. The Lord’s promise proves true; he is a shield for all who look to him for protection (2 Samuel 22:31, NLT).
The Psychology of Faith
Psychologically, faith acts as a mental and emotional stabilizer. Fear activates the body’s stress response—faith restores calm through trust. When your thoughts align with God’s truth, your brain releases peace instead of panic.
Faith rewires your mind to believe in what’s eternally true rather than what’s temporarily seen.
Faith is how you win spiritual warfare internally—by choosing trust over fear, belief over doubt, and peace over anxiety.
Reflection

Is it in your finances?

Faith doesn’t deny reality—it declares victory in the midst of it.
