The Shoes of Peace: Standing Firm in God’s Stability

By: Elizabeth Louis

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
(Luke 2:14, NLT)

Hello! It is going to be a great day! Are you ready to experience all God has in store for you?

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so you may be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do (Joshua 1:8, NLT).”

I’ve said it many times, and I’ll keep saying it—the devil is like a roaring lion, waiting to see whom he can devour. The question isn’t if he will attack—it’s whether you’ll be ready when he does.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8, NLT).”

The devil wants to destroy, kill, and steal from you—but Jesus came to give you abundant life.

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life (John 10:10, NLT).”

It’s no surprise the enemy tries to disrupt your peace—because peace keeps you stable. When you focus on Jesus instead of the chaos, you walk in victory.

Last week, we talked about putting on and applying the Breastplate of Righteousness. Today, let’s talk about Preparing Your Feet with the Gospel of Peace—how to wear peace effectively and courageously.

History of the Shoes of Peace

During the first century, marching was essential to a soldier’s survival. Roman soldiers wore caligae—sturdy military sandals made of thick leather with hobnails (short iron studs) driven through the soles for traction.

If a soldier’s shoes failed, he couldn’t stand firm in battle. A broken shoe meant vulnerability, defeat, or even death. Those hobnails allowed soldiers to grip rough terrain and hold their position no matter what came against them.

Similarly, peace is the foundation of your ability to stand firm in spiritual battles.

The Latin word pacem means agreement, tranquility, or absence of war. When Paul talks about being “fitted with readiness from the Gospel of Peace,” he’s describing an inner stability that keeps you grounded—no matter what’s happening around you.

When you wear the shoes of peace, you’re choosing not to let the external world invade your internal world. You’re choosing:

  • Not to worry.

  • Not to partner with anxiety.

  • Not to let fear lead your steps.

  • To rest in the perfect love of God.

“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear (1 John 4:18, NLT).”

Application: Walking in Peace Daily

“Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared (Ephesians 6:14–15, NLT).”

The Greek word for readiness in Ephesians 6:15 is hetoimasia, which can also mean “prepared foundation.” Paul is showing us that peace gives you a stable base—a steady footing that keeps you from slipping.

When you’re grounded in God’s peace, no circumstance, person, or attack can make you fall.

Peace is not the absence of problems—it’s the presence of stability.

The Gospel of Peace is the good news that you are reconciled to God. Because of Jesus, you no longer live at war with Him or within yourself.

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6, NLT).”

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid (John 14:27, NLT).”

Before knowing Christ, we all lived for ourselves, constantly at war internally—filled with striving, unrest, or fear. But when you surrender to Jesus, your inner chaos begins to calm.

Psychologically, this mirrors the shift from fight, flight, or freeze into a state of spiritual regulation—a settled nervous system grounded in God’s peace.

Peace doesn’t ignore reality; it redefines it through faith.

How to Walk in the Gospel of Peace

1. Fix your thoughts on God.
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you (Isaiah 26:3, NLT).”
Peace comes when your mind stays anchored in God’s character—not your circumstances.

2. Live reconciled, not reactive.
“And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him (2 Corinthians 5:18, NLT).”
Peace begins within and then flows outward to others.

3. Trade worry for prayer.
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6–7, NLT).”
When you release control, peace has room to reign.

4. Renew your mind daily.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think (Romans 12:2, NLT).”
Memorize a verse on peace and bury it in your heart. When anxiety rises, use that truth as your anchor.

Reflection

 Where are you losing peace?
 Is it in your thoughts?
 Your relationships?
 Your reactions?

The peace of God is not fragile—it’s divine armor. When your feet are fitted with peace, you can stand firm through any storm.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I walking in the peace of Christ or reacting in fear?
  • Am I protecting my heart from anxiety or partnering with it?
  • Am I standing firm, or am I slipping under pressure?

Peace is your position. Wear it well.

If this message stirred your heart, it’s time to go deeper.
